  • Notes
    • Early Life
Walter Johnson was born on the 9th of August 1842 in West Wycombe, the first born and only son of Walter Rankin Johnson and Louisa Stephens. His younger sister Isabella Anne was born a year later in December 1843. His father died shortly after, in 1844.

Walter went to Rugby School aged 14 in April 1856 and was there until 1861. Subsequently he went up to Trinity College in Oxford on the 4th June 1861; he obtained a BA in 1864 (see Alumni Oxonienses in the Sources list).

      Career
After university, Walter obtained a commission in the Royal Scots Greys1 in October 1866. He was promoted to Lieutenant in January 1870 and retired by the sale of his commission on the 6th January 1872.

By 1881, census returns show his occupation as an Iron Merchant (apparently in Middlesborough, according to Grace's Guide). Seeing as he married the daughter of a famous Victorian ironmaster in 1871, it seems likely that he was either persuaded to leave the army to more lucrative pursuits, or got fed up with the army and used his father-in-law to help him find an alternative career. Some years later he joined the Board of Bell Bros (the company started by his father-in-law), with which he was associated for 40 years. He was also a director of Messrs. Dorman, Long & Co., Ltd. He was for many years (1906-1912) chairman of the Middlesbrough Chamber of Commerce, and was a warm supporter of the volunteer movement, having been for some time in command of the two Middlesbrough Companies of the Durham Light Infantry, from which he retired with the rank of Major.

He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1907 and was a member of the New University Club in London.

      Family Life
Walter Johnson married Margaret Florence Bell, daughter of Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell, in 1871 in Chester le Street. At the time he was still a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots Greys. They had seven children, six of whom survived to adulthood:
      1. Walter Lyulph, born 1872 and who married Alice Hilda Lupton.
      2. Ivor Lowthian, born 1873; a barrister, but also worked in the iron industry like his father and brother; he married twice, firstly Alice Palgrave Walford, secondly Mary Aileen Courage. From Ivor descend the US Johnsons, Andersons and Livelys, as well as possibly the Saviles.
      3. Dorothea Margaret, born 1874 married Harald [sic] Raylton Dixon and from them descend the modern-day Dixons and Whitwells
      4. Phyllis Mary, born 1877 and a spinster
      5. Florence Phoebe, born 1879 and who married William Astell Kaye
      6. Phillip Hugh, born 1885 but died in 1886 as an infant
      7. Margaret Philippa, born 1887 and who married Christopher York Pease and from whom descend the modern-day Selby Smiths of Australia

      Death
Walter Johnson died on the 9th of February 1915 whilst visiting his daughter Dorothea (by then married to Harald Raylton Dixon and living in Redcar).
