Getting the right Thomas Bell
I originally had two possiblities for who Thomas Bell was:
- Son of Isaac Bell and Grace, baptised 5 March 1784 at Wreay, south of Carlisle.
- Son of Thomas Bell and Mary, baptised 19 Sep 1784 at Christ Church, Tynemouth
Given that Thomas married a Carlisle girl, I lean to the former option. Note that this baptismal date also corresponds exactly with the birth date given by Burke in
Burke's Peerage1. In further support, Thomas and Catherine's first daughter was called
Mary Grace; Mary was the name of Catherine Lowthian's mother's, Thomas Bell's mother was called Grace. In final support, a correspondent (10 Mar 2022) pointed out to me that the Losh family - with whom Thomas entered into business in Newcastle - were from Wreay and that Thomas Bell and his family are mentioned in "The Pinecone" by Jenny Uglow - a biography of Sarah Losh.
Grace's Guide introduces another wrinkle:
"Born in Lowhurst, Cumberland in 1774". I've no idea where they get this option from as I can find no baptismal records for that year in a place called
Lowhurst. However, there
is a place called
Low Hurst Wood, that is very close to Wreay (see above)...I think this refers to the same place as the first record above and somehow Grace's introduced an error in the birth date (writing 1774 in stead of 1784). The vast majority of Ancestry trees have Thomas born in 1774 in Lowhurst, but with no sources so I've no idea on what basis they have decided that. They all give his birth as 5 March 1774, so I presume they all just copied off each other, perhaps influenced by the Grace's typo (or perhaps Grace's typo came originally from Ancestry?).
