Early Life
Robert Brice was born some time between 1611 and 1613, just prior to when his father
Edward Bryce [sic] moved from Scotland to Ulster.
Career
Robert earned his fortune at
Castle Chichester, then the point of departure for the Scottish mail. At that time, people in extensive trade in the north of Ireland issued coinage of their own manufacture; pennies stamped with Robert Brice's name date from around 1671, which is when he retired from the business and moved to Dublin. Robert's business was handed over to his son Hugh; when the latter died the reins were taken over by Hugh's cousin Charles (son of Robert's brother Edward).
Family Life
Robert married
Elizabeth Stewart, possibly of the
Stewart family from
Ballintoy. He had three or four sons and at least three daughters:
- Randall, born around 1646. Was MP for Lisburn and Deputy Governor of Antrim around 1690. Died 1697.
- Mary, born around 1651. Married Thomas Knox.
- Edward, born c.1659, who married first Dorothy Upton and second Jane Dobbs
- Grisel, married William Brown and had three sons, one of whom, Sir Robert was a rich merchant "noted for his avarice" and elected an MP for Ilchester 1734-1747. [3]
- John, who died in 1674.
- Jane, date unkown
- Hugh, the youngest son, born around 1663; took over his father's business, but died aged 24.
According to
Reid1, Robert had three sons: "Edward, Hugh and Randal". Other sources
2 mention a fourth son John only in the context that the latter died in 1674.
Death
Robert died intestate on the 22
nd of November 1676 in Dublin, aged 65. He was buried at
St Audoen in Dublin.
