  • Notes
    • Early Life
We have a Samuel Liddell baptised on the 23rd of May 1681 at Gateshead, son of James. If this is the right person, then he would only have been 15 when he married Ruth Atkinson (see below) so it seems unlikely. Alternatively there was a Samuel Lyddell baptised on the 23rd October 1670 at Newcastle, the son of Charles Lyddell and Anne ___. This latter would fit with Samuel himself naming his eldest son 'Charles'.

      Career
Samuel appears to have been a freeman of Newcastle, where he is listed as m. mar. which I think might mean 'master mariner'. See Ongoing Research for a tantalising hint that Samuel may have been a privateer in the West Indies.

      Family Life
Samuel married Ruth Atkinson on the 20th of May 1697 at St Mary, Gateshead; they had:
      1. Mary, b. 1698 and who was still alive in 1662
      2. Charles, b. 1701 and who married Joan Welford and died in 1780
      3. Henry, b. 1704
      4. Samuel, b. 1705 and who died in 17632

      Footnotes
[1] A Charles Liddell (mariner) married an An[ne] Smart on the 11th of June 1669 at All Saints in Newcastle. This couple also had Ann, b. 1672 in Newcastle and (less possibly) a Charles b. 1675 in Gateshead and a Thomas b. 1678, also in Gateshead. Putative father Charles, in turn, might match a baptism in 1640 at Auckland St Andrew, Durham (son of Martin). Currently, this is my favoured pedigree over and above the second option, which is...

There was a Samuel Liddell of Newcastle, living around the same time, who was a pirate:
      See https://books.google.com.do/books?id=v1veDAAAQBAJ&lpg=PA636&ots=gFFE_2WIGB&dq=%22Samuel%20liddell%22%20newcastle&pg=PA235#v=onepage&q=%22Samuel%20liddell%22%20newcastle&f=false and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Liddell_(pirate) and http://petercorneliushoof.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-further-story-of-henry-jennings.html and http://baylusbrooks.com/index_files/Page2391.htm

This Samuel matches the first birth in 1681 that I list for Sam Liddell in Birth above.

The text in that google books link above says that "Samuel was son of James, who in turn was cousin of Sir Thomas Liddell" (it's not entirely clear which Sir Thomas this is - could be
      a) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Thomas_Liddell,_1st_Baronet (1578-1652) who married Isabel Anderson but probably this is too early
      b) Sir Thomas, grandson of the above who married Anne Vane, born bef. 1652 (because his father died in vita patris and his grandfather died in 1652) and died in 1697 - more likely
      - this Thomas was the only son of Sir Thomas Liddell and Bridget Woodward
If Samuel was born c. 1680 then his father James was born c. 1655, so likely of the generation of b) above

Other births in Gateshead to a James Liddell around the same time as Samuel:
      Jobn (1676)
      Ralph (1677)
      Richard (1679)
      Mary (1682)

https://www.british-history.ac.uk/antiquities-durham/vol2/pp207-218#h3-0007 has a pedigree for Lidell of Ravensworth Castle. I can see no brother to Thomas Lidell (who married Bridget Woodward) with the name James: the brothers with known issue were Francis and George.
However, there is a James b. 1622, fl. 1646, who would have been a second cousin. However this James was born too early to have been the father of Samuel born c. 1680
      Perhaps we have the succession Thomas Liddell (-1615) m. Jane Midford->Roger Liddell (1592-) m. Grace Clavering->James Liddell (1622-) m. ?->James Liddell (e1650-) m?->Samuel Liddell (c1680)

[2] Samuel junior's will (written 1662, proved 1663): https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D614241 mentions only his sister Mary, who apparently was a spinster. I have not found any wills for Mary, Henry or Charles
