Early Life
Jonathan Wadsworth was born in 1648, the son of
William Wadsworth of
Horbury in Yorkshire, and
Elizabeth ___.
Career
From FMG
1
a Dantsick merchant
"he was a merchant, trading to Dantsick, where a Samuel Wadsworth resided, who calls him cousin. Jonas Wadsworth, a merchant in London, acknowledges the same affinity." (FMG Vol 1 - Wadsworth, Priestley, Halstead, Busk)
Family Life
Jonathan married
Phoebe Kirby, daughter of
Joshua Kirby of
Wakefield, presumably around 1672 (though no marriage record has been found); they had:
- Mary b. 1673 who married Thomas Webster of Dewsbury
- Phoebe, b. 1678, married Joseph Sutton of Leeds
- Hanna, b. 1684, married Joseph Conder of Leeds
- Elizabeth, b. 1686, married Rev. Richard Halstead of Hooton-Paynell
- Rachael, b. 1689, married Jacob Hansson Busk a naturalised wool merchant from Sweden
It seems that Jonathan had a brother, Samuel Wadsworth (of
Flanshawe and Horbury), who married Welcome Kirby, the sister of Phoebe. A third Kirby sister, Cambdena, married a John Wordsworth of
Wakefield and
Horbury. This latter John was son of Isaac Wordsworth of
Brookhouse in Langside. It is unclear whether these Wordsworths are related to the Wadsworths of this page; a note in
FMG1 suggests that John Wordsworth of Wakefield and Horbury was "not related to the Horbury family [i.e. the Wadsworths of Horbury]".
