  • Notes
    • Both Familiae Minorum Gentium and Lincolnshire Pedigrees start with this John Gylby of West Ravendale, but an earlier pedigree is provided in the Visitation of Lincolnshire (1562-1564). The usual caveats apply to such early pedigrees, and no dates or spouses names are given, so the value is limited. For completeness, the pedigree is:

This John<-Thomas<-John<-Thomas<-Nicholas<-Richard<-Thomas Gylby of Ashby juxta Partney and Spilsby [born in early 1300s probably]

The Visitation of LIncolnshire, reported in The Genealogist, has a slightly different succession:
This John<-Thomas<-John<-John<-Thomas<-Nicholas<-Richard<-Thomas Gylby of Ashby juxta Partney and Spilsby

Having no documentary evidence of this line beyond the visitation itself, I'll stop my tree at John the subject of this page.

      Early Life
John was the son of Thomas Gilby and ___ Craycrofte. He would have been born around 1490 (based on extrapolation from his descendants).

      Family Life
John married Agnes Brough, daughter of Robert Brough of Brough Hall, probably in the late 1510s or early 1520s. They had:
      1. William, dsp
      2. Mathew, dsp
      3. George who married Elizabeth Hansard
      4. Catherine, who married Thomas Bell and who is mentioned in her brother George's will
      5. Thomas, who married Elizabeth Castleforth
      6. Ellen, who married firstly William Flemers and secondly William Wentworth of Gossall
