Early Life
James Stewart must have been born before 1591/2 when his father died. He was said to have been a very young man at this time of his father's death
2, so presumbably born on or after about 1585 (making him 6 or less when his father died).
Career & Family Life
James married, by arrangement of the King in an endeavour to resolve a feud between the two families,
Anne Gordon, eldest daughter of
George, first Marquess Huntley.
Debrett's1 gives us more on this feud:
James ... m. 1601 Lady Anne Gordon, daughter of the instigator of his father's murder, he having previously, through the King's mediation, become reconciled to the Marquess of Huntly.
The marriage contract was dated 2
nd October 1607.
In 1611 James obtained from
James VI a new investiture of the whole earldom of Moray to himself and his male heirs (as the title came through his mother, rather than his father, who was Lord Doune).
Death
James died in 1638.
