Early Life
James Stewart was born c. 1529, the eldest son of
Sir James Stewart of
Beath and
Margaret Lindsay.
He succeeded as heir to his father on the 8th July 1560
2. James was the Constable of Doune Castle and Commendator of Inchcolm Abbey and was often called St Colme in contemporary letters. He was created Lord Doune on the 24
th of November 1581 by
King James VI, by charter under the Great Seal, and confirmed by Parliament on the 29
th of November that same year.
Incidentally, the Doones of southern England (e.g. Lorna Doone) are claimed in
The Scots Peerage1 to be related to the Scottish Dounes of Doune Castle.
Bibliography
As we go back so far in time, there are a few key sources to trace the Stewarts backwards:
- Burke's Peerage: the pedigree of Castle-Stewart (e.g. 1938, page 365, which mentions James' father, Sir James, Knight of Beith; or 1894, page 260, which has a little more detail).
- The Scots Peerage, which covers Avandale/Ochiltree (the ancestors of this James Stewart) as well as the Lords Doune themselves (in Vol. 6, page 186+).
