Burke's Peerage1:
Sir John Elphinstone, of Pittendreich, had charters of Erth [Airth], Cragorth (Craigforth), and the other Stirlingshire lands in 1496 and 1497, and in 1503 these were resigned by Patrick Lord Lindsay of the Byres to be held by Elphinstone of the Crown, and incorporated by charter under the designation of the Barony of Elphinstone. He died 1508 or 1509.
Family Life
Married three times: which wife was the mother of his heir Alexander is not clear.
