Early Life
Roger Gipps was the son of
Thomas Gipps (a London clothworker) and
Mary Sherwood. He was likely born around 1610 (or earlier) given that his mother was born in 1572.
Family Life
Roger married
Helen Brockman, most likely around 1637
1. Helen was the daughter of Sir
William Brockman of
Newington-next-Hythe in Kent, and
Anne Bunce. Note that Roger Brockman's sister Sarah married James Bunce, Helen Brockman's first cousin. So there was clearly a strong relationship between the
Brockman and
Gipps families at this time. Roger and Helen settled in Newington after the marriage.
With
Helen Brockman (who is listed as Ellen in the parish records),
Roger had:
- William, bapt. 2 Sep 1638 or 1639 (there are records of both) at St Nicholas, Newington Next Hythe
- Thomas, bapt. 15 Apr 1640 at St Michael Bassishaw, London
- Anne, bapt. 18 Apr 1641 at St Nicholas
- Helen, bapt. 9 Jun 1644 at St Nicholas
- James, bapt. 2 Aug 1645 at St Nicholas
- George, bapt. 13 October 1646 at St Nicholas
- Simon, bapt. 23 April 1648 at St Nicholas and who married Anne Landman
- Margery, bapt. 10 Sep 1650 at St Nicholas and who died apparently unmarried in 1708
- Phoebe, bapt. 26 Mar 1655 at St Nicholas (father shown as 'Rope")
Simon and
George are both listed as sons of
Roger in Berry's
County Genealogies3 and also recorded in
Hasted2. Hasted further indicates that
Simon was the eldest, followed by
George, then
William, but this clearly doesn't match the baptismal records - though perhaps they were the eldest to survive into adulthood. Note that the baptismal entry for Simon is not indexed properly, but luckily appears on the same page as his siblings James, George and Margery.
Roger may have married again, to a Susanna Moore, in 1665 in London. The marriage entry notes both Roger and Susanna were widows from previous marriages. This Roger is noted to be 59 years' old, making his birth year 1606. Perhaps it was actually 1607 and this is the source of the "marriage year" mistakenly shown in
County Genealogies. There are two versions of this entry: in one he is shown as 59, in the other 50: evidently the original manuscript makes it hard to tell between a 0 and a 9.
Death
Roger Gipps was alive for the
Visitation of Kent in 1663; and clearly if he was the person who married Susanna Moore he was still alive in 1665 and may have moved to London. Unfortunately I can't find any trace of a burial record for him, whether in Newington Next Hythe, or in
London St Botolphs (where he married Susanna Moore). A couple of Ancestry trees have him dying in 1685 with no sources.
Footnotes
[1] Roger cannot have married in 1607 as shown in
County Genealogies (see third footnote) because their eldest son
William was born in 1638 or 1639; Hasted (next footnote) gives a date of 1637.
