Family Life
Mary married Thomas Budd on the 25
th of June 1756 at St Mary in Teddington; at that time she was already 47 years old and it appears that they had no children (or at least, none who survived Mary's death in 1792).
Death
Mary died around October-November 1792, aged about 83. Her will, proved at PCC on 24
th December 1792, mentions the following people:
- Nephew Richard Cook1, a baker of Teddington
- Ann Cook, wife of Richard Cook mentioned above
- Great-nephew Richard Chandler Cook, the son of her nephew Richard Cook
- Niece Jane Gruaz2 and her husband Louys Gruaz
- William McPherson Rice, brother of Jane Gruaz
- John Rice, Richard Rice, Thomas Rice and Mary Rance, late Rice, the sons and daughter of William Rice the Elder
- William Augustus Rice and Mercy Rice the children of William McPherson Rice
- Elizabeth Rice, wife of John Rice of Hampton in Middlesex, painter
One thing that's not clear is whether "William Rice the Elder" is the William Rice (1733-1794) who married Mercy Cook (1731-1783), or whether it's the father of that William Rice, a person who I haven't yet been able to identify. In support of the latter is that William Rice (1733-1794) had a son who Mary explicitly calls "William McPherson Rice" in her will, rather than "William the Younger". If this is true, then William the Elder would have been of the same generation as Mary Chandler herself, and his children John, Richard, Thomas and Mary would have been siblings of William Rice (1733-1794).
If, instead, William the Elder is the same person as William Rice (1733-1794), then John, Richard, Thomas and Mary would be siblings of William McPherson Rice and his sister Jane (Gruaz). An it turns out that Jane and William McPherson Rice definitely had siblings called Mary, Thomas and Richard (though I haven't yet found a John).
She (or her husband Thomas) apparently amassed quite a large property portfolio during their lifetimes.
Footnotes
[1] Presumably son or grandson of Mary's sister
Jane Chandler, who married
William Cook
[2] Jane Rice (1758-1844) was actually her grand-niece, being the daughter of
Mercy Cook and grand-daughter of
Jane Chandler, Mary's sister.
