WILLIAM (DE WARENNE), EARL OF SURREY, or EARL WARENNE, s. and h. of the above, by Gundred, his wife ;

suc. his father 24 June 1089, and was knighted before Jan. 1091. Taking part with Robert
"Curthose" against Hen. I., he was
deprived of his Earldom about 1101, but restored the following year. Was in command at
Tinchebraye, 28 Sep. 1106, and at
Brémule, 20 Aug. 1119; Gov. of Rouen, &c, 1135, being one of the 5 Earls who were that year present at the death of Henry I. at Lyons; witness to King Stephen's second charter, 1136. He
m. in 1118, Isabel, or Elizabeth
"of Vermandois," widow of Robert COUNT OF MEULAN, who
d. 5 June 1118, before which date she (being then the mother of 8 children) had eloped with the said Earl William, She was da. of Hugh the Great, COUNT OF VERMANDOIS (s. of Henry I., King of France), by Adelaide, da. and h. of Herbert, COUNT OF VERMANDOIS AND VALOIS. He
d. 11 May 1133, aud was
bur. at Lewes priory afsd.
