Family Life
From the
Scots Peerage1:
Margaret, Countess of Mar, sister and direct heir of Earl Thomas, was married, before 13 November 1357, to Sir William Douglas of Douglas, afterwards created Earl of Douglas, and her brother granted to them, no doubt on their marriage, the lands of Drumlanrig, and perhaps Cavers. On 21 June 1374, when Thomas, Earl of Mar, was apparently dead, the Earl of Douglas styles himself Earl of Douglas and Mar, and continued the use of the double title until his death in 1384. It has been contended that the latter title was assumed in right of his wife, who was the true holder of the title...The Countess after her husband's death [1384], and during the life of her son James, who held the titles of Douglas and Mar, styles herself Countess of Douglas, Lady of Mar and of Garioch. After her son's death [1388] she, in 1389, describes herself as Countess of Douglas and Mar.
