    • Early Life
      George Downing was the son of George Downing of Beccles in Suffolk, and Cicely ___. He was probably born some time around 1550.

      Family Life
      George married ___ Bellamy and they had:
      1. Nathaniel, bapt. 1587
      2. Susan(na), who married Francis Kirby, a London merchant
      3. Nahomie
      4. Abigail
      5. Benjamin, Anne and Elnathan who all died as infants


      Death
      George's wife died in 1610 and was buried at St Lawrence in Ipswich. George himself died some time that same year. His will, dated 14 January 1610/11, reads:
      George Downynge of Ipswiche, Scholemaster.
      Firste I commytt my sowle to my blessed Saviour Christe Jesus, who hath redemed it with his precious bloudd. And my Bodye I comytt to Christian Buryall with assured psuation that he will rayse it upp at ye laste daye from death to eternal lyfe, because he dyed for it, and rose againe to iustifie it.

      As for the seate & staye of myne howse, landes, goods and movables I give full auchtoritie to Susan Downynge, Nahomie Downynge and Abigale Downynge, my thne daughters, to sell my howse and tenements with the gardanis, orchardes and all that doeth belonge thereto, with the welles Passages by both the back gates, to the value of eight skoare and tenn powndes.

      All the rest of my goodes to my foresaid three daughters to be equally devyded amongst themselves. I give my three daughten the lease of the howse I now dwell in, being called the white Friars, being the Free howld of William Hill of London Merchaunt, whereof there is Fower powndes a yeare will airyse cleare, the Rente beinge paide.

      I give unto Joseph Downinge all my bookes at home and at Cambridge, saving my twoo houshold bybles with tenne of my cheif bookes at home, whlche I will give my three daughers.

      I give Nahomie my danske cheste whiche standethe in the somm plour uppon the daunsk cheste.

      I will and give full aucthoritia to my three daughters to receive and paye all my debtes, and whatsoever is left shalbe therse. I have made my three daughers, Susan, Nahomie and Abygull my sole and only executrix; this xvijth of Januarie Anno Dni 1611.

      Proved at Ipswich 3 Ootober 1611 & Administration granted to Naomie one of the daughters.
